The San Benito County Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA) is composed of 11 school districts and the County Office of Education (COE). The function of the SELPA and participating educational agencies is to provide a quality educational program appropriate to the needs of each eligible individual with exceptional needs between the ages of birth and 22 years who resides with the plan area. These programs and services include a full continuum of alternatives for special education students either in your local district, or through services provided by the COE, or in cooperation with adjacent districts or SELPAs.

Services provided by the SELPA Administration include the following:

  • Facilitation of the Community Advisory Committee (CAC)
  • Coordination of the Management Information System (MIS)
  • Provide Program Specialist support
  • Provide Technical Assistance to districts
  • Develop IEP Forms and Procedures
  • Conduct Fiscal Monitoring
  • Serve as liaison to California Department of Education (CDE)
  • Facilitate the development and approval of the Local Plan
  • Assist with staff development
  • Provide mediation and assistance with due process hearings and compliance proceedings
  • Recruit and provide training for surrogate parents
  • Provide liaison to various community agencies, such as Department of Mental Health and Human Services, San Andreas Regional Center, California Children's Services, and the Probation Department
  • Coordinate the required Memorandum of Understanding for Interagency Collaboration
  • Serve as the Administrative Unit for the SELPA for the disbursement of funds
  • Serve as a resource to parents
